Mapping belowground biodiversity - first global earthworm maps (October 2019)

"Pr. Joann Whalen contributed as co-author to an article published in Science on 25th October 2019. This publication presents the first global maps of earthworm biodiversity (diversity, abundance and biomass) and shows how these communities and the vital ecosystem services they provide may be seriously affected by climate change, with a cascading effect on other soil species."
Professor Joann Whalen named a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Soil Science (July 2019).

"Pr. Joann Whalen has been made a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Soil Science (CSSS). The Award is for members with a distinguished record of accomplishment in soil science & service to the CSSS."
Auguste Scott Prize received (June 2019)

"Pr. Joann Whalen was awarded the Auguste Scott prize given by the Association quebecoise de specialistes en science du sol (AQSSS). The prize is awarded for outstanding contributions to the field of soil science."
Motivational words from Dr. Joann Whalen in light of International Women’s day
"Each year on March 8th, women from around the world come together to celebrate their rights for equality. Canada BioFuelNet would like to celebrate the women in our network, and especially highlights the efforts of Dr. Joann Whalen. Dr. Whalen plays an important role both as an essential leader and researcher in the BioFuelNet network and as an inspiration to all female professionals ."

UNDERSTANDING NUTRIENT CYCLING WITHIN AGROECOSYSTEMS
"Shedding light on the soil interactions which govern nutrient flows. Here, [Whalen] talks about her route into the field, and why this work is so valuable."
